Corrections and Clarifications

* In a report "Over 60 p.c. voting in Maharashtra civic polls" (February 2, 2007), the first paragraph was: "Over 60 per cent voters exercised their franchise in by and large peaceful polling on Monday for electing municipal corporations of 10 major cities of Maharashtra. The counting will take place on Tuesday." It was an editing error. The original sentence mentioned "today" (Thursday, February 1, 2007) and "tomorrow" (Friday, February 2, 2007).

* In the first paragraph of the column "Past & Present — Macaulay's Minute revisited" (The Hindu-Magazine, February 4, 2007, page 3), it was stated that one of the two notable contributions of Lord Macaulay was to draft the Criminal Procedure Code, and in this, its two sections (Section 144 and Section 420) are well known. It was an error. The two sections are a part of the Indian Penal Code, and are not of the Criminal Procedure Code. Also, Section 420 defines only cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property (and does not define what is counterfeiting, as was published). Section 231 of the Indian Penal Code defines the word "counterfeiting".

* In a report "Zaheer Khan demolishes Bengal" ("Sport", February 4, 2007), on the second day of the Ranji Trophy final, it was stated that Wasim Jaffer was cruising on 77, while the scorecard gave his score as 50 runs. It was an error in the text. The scorecard was right and a correction made in the later editions.

* A report "[Maria] Sharapova injured, Martina Hingis enters final" ("Sport", February 4, 2007), on the Pan Pacific Open final (tennis), stated that Sharapova lost the first set and retired in the second set, while the results column showed she had won the first set with no mention of the second set. Sharapova did lose the first set before retiring. The results (At Tokyo, WTA Toray Pan Pacific Open: Semi-finals: Ana Ivanovic bt Maria Sharapova 1-6, retd.) had erroneously suggested that she was up a set before retiring.
