Collector asks officials to take up projects to tackle scarcity

  • Strategy to focus on permanent measures to address the problem
  • `Complete repair on damaged water pipelines on a war footing'

Thiruvananthapuram: District Collector N. Ayyappan on Saturday warned of stern action against misuse of water. Presiding over a meeting of the District Planning Committee, he directed officials to take up priority projects to tackle the impending drought and water scarcity. He called on them to complete the repair on damaged water pipelines on a war footing.

Mr. Ayyappan told the meeting that the thrust of the proposed plan should be to avoid using tanker lorries to provide water to the parched areas. The strategy should focus on permanent measures to address the problem, he proposed.

Officials were told to ensure that families below the poverty line are provided with electricity connections immediately. The committee reviewed the progress of works taken up by various departments up to January in the current financial year. MLAs Anathalavattam Anandan, N. Rajan, District Planning Officer and district-level officials participated in the meeting. The Collector highlighted the need to popularise the welfare programmes implemented by the departments of Social Welfare and SC/ST Development. He also instructed officials to submit the periodic progress report to the District Planning Officer before the 10th of every month.
