Aerospace command soon, says IAF Chief

GANDHINAGAR: The Chief of Air Staff, S.P. Tyagi, on Sunday said that the country needed an aerospace command that would be in place soon.

``You need reconnaissance from space, you need communication from space, and you need space assets in the new world," Air Chief Marshal Tyagi said on the sidelines of the commanders' meet here.

Terming the country as a ``transoceanic power,'' he said the Government was aware of the need for an aerospace command. He said that training of a core group of people for the `aerospace command' had begun.

The plan for setting up of the aerospace command at Akkulam in Thiruvananthapuram has been in discussion for close to two years but has reportedly met with resistance from the Navy and the Army, as they fear monopolisation by the IAF of any future aerospace formation.

The aerospace command envisages integration of various components of the Air Force, the Navy, the Army and the ISRO to provide protection of the nation's outer space.

However, the need for it has gained strength after China's latest successful attempt to destroy satellite-using missiles. ANI
