ULFA shoots at police vehicle in Tinsukia

  • Hindi-speaking trader, policeman injured
  • Night-running trains to remain suspended

    Guwahati: A Hindi-speaking trader and a policeman were injured when militants of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) shot at a police vehicle near Tongona under Kakopathar police station in Tinsukia district on Sunday afternoon.

    Inspector-General of Police (Law and Order) D.K. Pathak said the vehicle was attacked by the ULFA militants when it was returning from patrolling duties from a weekly market. A jawan of the 2 Assam Police Battalion and a trader, who took a lift in the vehicle, sustained bullet injuries.The police retaliated, but the militants fled the scene immediately, he said.

    The police team had gone to the weekly market for providing security as Hindi-speaking traders congregate there. Locals said seven youths were loitering in the market during the day and one of them had fired at the police vehicle before fleeing the scene.

    Special train

    The Northeast Frontier Railway authorities have extended the suspension of night-running trains till February 7.

    They are operating a daily special train between Guwahati and Tinsukia from Sunday to clear stranded passengers. It will leave Guwahati at 6 a.m. and reach Tinsukia at 6 p.m. From Tinsukia it will leave at 6 a.m. and reach Guwahati at 6 p.m. The timings of several long-distance trains have been rescheduled.
