KOTTAYAM: Riding on captain M.V. Dhanya's consistent smashing and backed by a solid block, host Mahatma Gandhi Univesity defeated Calicut in straight sets for its second win in the Pool `A' league of the National inter-university women's volleyball championship at the MGU Sports Pavilion here on Sunday evening. MGU, virtually the Assumption College side coached by Anilkumar, was forced to five sets by Calicut in the South-West Zone event a few days ago but it was evident on Sunday evening that the host has worked on the weak areas. The block, manned nicely by Sumitha and Sreevidya, kept the Calicut attackers Jeeshma and Rubi Joseph at bay for a good part of the match while libero Priyamol Divakaran handled the backcourt smartly. Delhi, the North-East Zone runner-up, fared miserably losing both its matches in the four-team Group 'B'. The team's two star attackers, internationals Nirjala and Sneha were absent here and it showed on the team's performance. The results: Pool A: Mahatma Gandhi, Kottayam bt Calicut 25-21, 25-23, 25-12; Mahatma Gandhi bt Calcutta 25-22, 25-12, 25-16; Panjabi, Patiala bt Calcutta 25-18, 25-21, 25-22; Calicut bt Panjabi 22-25, 20-25, 25-23, 25-15, 15-10. Pool B: GNDU, Amritsar bt Delhi 25-17, 25-22, 22-25, 25-22; Madras bt Delhi 25-13, 25-17, 25-4; Kannur bt GNDU 25-19, 25-12, 25-10.
