Thomas sets new meet mark

Bangalore : A 30-year old meet record went into oblivion as Calicut University's Alvin. A. Thomas sailed past the 400m hurdles in 52.45s in the 67th all-India inter-University athletics championship at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium here on Saturday.

Alvin's effort won him the gold besides clipping the earlier record of 52.50s, set by Punjab University's Besanth Singh in 1977.

The first year B.Sc Zoology student at St. Thomas College in Thrissur and who trains under coach Walter John, edged past the second placed Satinder Singh (52.78s) of Gurunanak Dev University and Annamalai University's P. Balachandran (53.69s).

In the women's section, Sanjo Devi of Himachal Pradesh University, kept her tryst with breaking records intact. After setting a new meet record in the javelin throw's qualifying rounds here on Friday, Sanjo went one step ahead and in the final here on Saturday, she bettered her own one-day old record of 50.73m. The 23-year old B.A. Physical Education and Sociology student at PG Degree College at Amitpur, hurled a record distance of 51.69m. Meanwhile in the showpiece 100m final, Kerala University's S. Arunjit (10.71s) and Bharathiar University's T. Aishwarya (12.15s) emerged the fastest male and female athletes respectively.

Hashanmeet Singh (Panjabi University), 55.64.

Women: 100m: 1. T. Aishwarya (Bharathiar), 12.15s; 2. V.D. Shijila (Kannur), 12.21; 3. Sunitha Varghese (MGU), 12.28; 400m hurdles: 1. Leena Cheriyan (Calicut), 1:01.80; 2. Ruma Biswas (Calcutta), 1:02.66; 3. E. Prathiba (Madras), 1:03.36; High jump: 1. Kavya Muthanna (VTU), 1.70m; 2. Geethu Sacaria (Calicut), 1.63; 2. Lindamol M. Rajan (Calicut), 1.63; Shot put: 1.
