CHENNAI: Members of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) on Tuesday staged a walkout from the Assembly. Even as the House began the deliberations, the AIADMK members were on their feet, raising slogans against the Government. Though the Speaker asked them to resume their seats, they walked out. Later, AIADMK deputy leader O. Panneerselvam said the party MLAs would boycott the rest of the proceedings. Members belonging to the MDMK also joined the walkout.
Jayalalithaa's
demand
AIADMK General Secretary Jayalalithaa said in a statement here that the party would launch a series of agitations demanding the resignation of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin in the wake of the High Court verdict on "irregularities" in the Chennai Corporation elections. She also demanded their resignation as members of the Legislative Assembly. Those police officers who "failed to discharge their duties" and the State Election Commissioner should also be removed, she said.
Veerasamy joins issue
Electricity Minister Arcot N.Veerasamy on Tuesday joined issue with AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa and wanted to know why a government that had implemented so many welfare schemes in such a short span of time should resign. He wanted to know if the DMK Government had done any wrong like the enmasse dismissal of government servants as the AIADMK government had done.
