CHENNAI : Saarang 2007, IIT Madras' annual cultural event, brings you Sukhwinder Singh, Global Rhythms, Chennai rockers Junkyard Groove and Celtic rock band Merzhin from Brittany, France. That's just the professional shows. There are also the regular inter college competitions in dramatics choreography, JAM, extempore and music among others. This year, The Hindu is the Saarang media partner. The expected footfall is 50,000 for the five-day festival starting January 25. The professional show in the evening will be by Global Rhythms, a U.S.-based troupe that performs music from all over the world on Western instruments. On Republic Day, Sukhwinder Singh will sing. The concert promises songs from `Taal', `Omkara' and even `Chaiyya Chaiyya' from `Dil Se'. Catch Chennai band Junkyard Groove with Ameeth Thomas on vocals, before they head for Dubai's Desert Rock Festival 2007 where they will open for bands such as Iron Maiden and Incubus. That is on January 29. Following them is Merzhin, a six-member band that combines traditional Celtic instruments with the conventional electric guitars, drum kit and bass. A stage adaptation of Chetan Bhagat's `Five Point Someone', a novel about life at IIT, will be performed on January 27. New events this year include a short filmmaking competition and photography.
