Villarreal shares honours with Sevilla

MADRID: Leader Sevilla drew with Villarreal 0-0 in the Spanish League football here on Saturday. In the other game, Osasuna had four players ejected in the final stages during the 1-0 loss to Atletico Madrid.

Osasuna lost Carlos Cuellar, Roberto Soldado, goalkeeper Ricardo Lopez and Raul Garcia in separate incidents in the last 18 minutes in a game decided by Ze Castro's 83rd-minute goal.

Atletico's victory at the halfway stage of the season lifted it to third place. Sevilla heads the standings with 38 points from 19 games. Barcelona has 35 from 17, Atletico 35 from 19, and Madrid 35 from 18.

Atletico's Portuguese defender Ze Castro scored his second league goal for the club off a bouncing shot from the edge of the area which deceived Ricardo.

Captain Cuellar was the first Osasuna player to be dismissed five minutes earlier for a foul which led to a penalty which Atletico striker Fernando Torres wasted by firing wide.

Substitute Soldado went in the 87th minute for elbowing Ze Castro in the face while Ricardo received his second yellow card for kicking the ball away in the 90th. Midfielder Garcia was sent off for a kick on Atletico defender Yiourkas Seitaridis late into injury time.

The results: Spanish League: Atletico Madrid bt Osasuna 1-0; Villarreal drew with Sevilla 0-0.

Italian League: Ascoli lost to Atalanta 1-3; Reggina drew with Palermo 0-0.

English Premier League: Aston Villa bt Watford 2-0; Middlesbrough bt Bolton 5-1; Newcastle United drew with West Ham 2-2; Portsmouth lost to Charlton 0-1; Fulham drew with Tottenham Hotspur 1-1; Reading bt Sheffield United 3-1. — AP
