Viswabharati Vidyaniketan to conduct talent test again

Special Correspondent

VIJAYAWADA: Viswabharati Vidyaniketan, a Gudivada-based residential school, will be holding `merit scholarship test' on its campus on February 4 for those students who could not appear for the State-wide test held on January 12 at some examination centres owing to local disturbances.

School director Potluri Sreemannarayana said in a statement on Saturday that the test would be conducted between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. for students from fifth class to tenth class, and the management would bear all the expenses for providing lunch to the parents and students who appear for the test at Gudivada. The names of students who wish to appear for the test could be registered by calling 98481-34850 or 98481-34859 or 98481-78388.

Mr. Sreemannarayana said that some local activists of student unions at Godavarikhani in Karimnagar district had prevented the representatives of the school from organising the talent test by alleging that it was aimed at "luring away bright students". Though the organisers had shown to the agitating students a High Court order that allowed the conduct of such talent tests, the students did not heed their plea and even threatened to kill them if the test was not cancelled immediately. Mr. Sreemannarayana said he had information that the managements of a few local schools were behind the attack, as they were afraid of losing local students.

A similar attempt was made at Anantapur to prevent the test from being conducted. but the test was held after the police lathi-charged the protestors. The test was successfully conducted in 38 centres in the State, and scholarships worth Rs.15 lakhs would be distributed, Mr. Sreemannarayana said.
