Management award for BEML

BANGALORE: The Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) has been honoured with the Golden Peacock Innovation Management Award 2006.

The award was received by BEML Chairman and Managing Director VRS Natarajan from Ola Ullsten, the former Prime Minister of Sweden , at a function held in Kolkata on January 14.

The BHEL has been given the award in recognition of its commitment to innovative management practices.

Seminar on design technology

BANGALORE: To popularise the latest advances in the field of civil engineering, the Association of Consulting Civil Engineers (ACCE) will conduct a three-day national seminar and exhibition on `Recent Developments in Design and Construction Technologies (REDECON 2007) from January 18. The event will be held at the NIMHANS Convention Centre.

ACCE chairman BSC Rao told presspersons here on Tuesday that the seminar was an attempt to lay focus on the recent developments in design and construction technology. — Staff Reporter

Examination in Kannada

BANGALORE: The Kannada Abhivrudhi Prathisthana will conduct an examination in Kannada for students of classes V to X on culture, arts, literature and history of the State.

The test will be held between 10.30 a.m. and 11.30 a.m. on January 27 at all schools, irrespective of the medium of instruction.

Cancer detection camp

MYSORE: Annapurna of J.P. Nagar, in the memory of her mother, will be conducting a free cancer detection camp at the Preethi Cancer Centre, M.G. Film screening

MYSORE: The Mysore Film Society (MFS) has arranged a free screening "Wild Dog Dairies", a film directed by wild life photographers Krupakar-Senani on January 18 at Vanaranga in Rangayana premises. The duo have conceived, produced, directed and cinematographed the

50-minute film for National Geographic. It has been screened in the Screen Documentary Film Festival and Wild Vision Film Festival in Germany and is being screened for the first time in India. Coaching classes

Relief for victims of STF atrocities

NEW DELHI: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has announced an interim relief of Rs. 2.80 crore to 89 victims of atrocities committed by the Joint Special Task Force, set up by Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to apprehend brigand Veerappan. The NHRC said that a probe would be soon constituted against the erring officials. "Our priority is to provide justice to victims. We will set parameters soon how to go about the identification of guilty officials responsible for violation of human rights," Justice Shivraj Patil, acting chairperson of the NHRC, said on Monday. — Special Correspondent

Book bank

BANGALORE: Students doing courses in engineering, business administration and computer applications in the city can now get textbooks and reference material at low costs from M.V. Book Bank. The Chennai-based organisation, which has started its Karnataka operations, will circulate books among these students at Rs. 600 a semester. The students can approach the branch office with their college identity cards and two photographs and get enrolled as members. Book Bank managing director V. Balaji told presspersons here on Tuesday that if the students bought the same books, it would cost them between Rs. 3,000 and Rs. 5,000 per semester. Photo exhibition

BANGALORE: An exhibition of photographs titled "in Defence of Civilisation" is on at the Palace Grounds. It will be on January 21. The exhibition, which runs on the sidelines of the 12th Centre of Indian Trade Unions' All India Conference, covers major events in world history. Starting with World War I the exhibition ends with the recent execution of Saddam Hussein. Organised by the Kerala-based Forum for Progressive Artistes and Writers, the collection of photographs intends to "tell the tales of oppression and resistance". — Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Bangalore University's Yoga Centre has invited applications for guest faculty who will take some classes of the certificate course in yoga studies. Poachers nabbed

BANGALORE: In a joint operation by Deputy Conservator of Forest of Kollegal and Cauvery Wildlife Division, six persons were arrested on the charge of poaching of elephants near Doddanne. The names of the accused are Belludi Madaiah, Suntari Madaiah, Karna, Shivanna, Butta and Kumara of Billegundala in Tamil Nadu.

With this, the Forest Department has solved the case of poaching of three elephants in Doddanne in March 2005. — Staff Reporter

Vitamin programme

SHIMOGA: A fifteen-day Vitamin A Supplementation Programme starting from Wednesday till January 31 was launched in the district on Tuesday. Vitamin A will be given to children in the age group of one year to three years in syrup form.

Talking to presspersons here on Tuesday the District Reproduction Child Health Officer Jayaraj said that an action plan had been prepared to take up the Vitamin A Supplementation Programme in two phases, January and July, with a gap of six months. — Staff Correspondent

Rally on January 21

Bidar: Virat Hindu Samavesh, a public rally, will be held in Bidar on January 21. Heads of various religious institutions will discuss issues related to caste system, untouchability and other social evils, Basavaraj Patil Ashtur, president of the reception committee, told presspersons in Bidar on Tuesday. Amendment opposed

BIJAPUR: The Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS), Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha (KPRS), and Leftist and Dalit organisations have jointly planned a rally against the proposed amendment to the APMC Act, in Bijapur on January 25. Addressing a joint press conference here on Sunday, KRRS honorary president Basavaraj Thambake and KPRS president Maruthi Manpade said the proposed amendment was against the interests of farmers and local traders. — Staff Correspondent

Teak billets seized

SIRSI: Teak billets worth Rs. 40,000 were seized by Siddapur Police from a vehicle near Mavinagundi in Honnavar-Bangalore National Highway on Sunday. According to the police, V.N. Prasanna (34) of Aralagod, Ramachandra Balagar (54) of Jog and Umesh Naik (28) of Kanur have been arrested in this connection. — Correspondent

Gutted

SIRSI: Paddy haystack worth over Rs. 2 lakh grown in 40 acres in Chigalli in Mundgod taluk, belonging to Ramanna Ganjannavar, Giri Mallappa, Parasappa Babu were gutted on Sunday.

In another incident, a cattleshed belonging to Mahadevappa Malavalli in Kavalkoppa in Mundgod taluk was gutted on Sunday. The loss is estimated at Rs. 50,000. — Correspondent

SIRSI: Gayana, Nratya-Yaksha-Hasya, a cultural programme will be held at Rangamandir at Yadalli near Sirsi on January 17 at 5 p.m.

Noted Hindustani musician Smita Bellur, Bangalore will present a classical music programme. Shridhar Hegde Chapparmane and his team will perform a Yakshahasya programme. There is a Bharatanatyam performance by Sandhyarani Giranimane, Yellapur.
