Shiv Sena activists protest

NEW DELHI: Shiv Sena activists staged a protest here on Saturday demanding immediate execution of Afzal Guru who was convicted in the Parliament attack case and sentenced to death. The protesters also set afire an effigy of Afzal at Khajuri Chowk in North Delhi.

Addressing the protesters, Delhi Shiv Sena chief Jai Bhagwan Goyal said it was because of the Government's lax policy towards militants that terrorism was on the rise. He questioned the Government's rationale in putting off Afzal's execution.

BSF man demands probe

NEW DELHI: A BSF personnel on Saturday staged a protest at India Gate here against the alleged involvement of the force's officers in acts of corruption and smuggling.

Gurmail Singh marched holding the tri-colour in one hand and a chopper in another, demanding that an inquiry be held into the alleged acts of corruption by officers posted on the frontier with Bangladesh.

Two held after encounter

NEW DELHI: Two young men allegedly involved in over 60 criminal cases were arrested following an encounter with the Special Staff of the South-West Delhi police at Vasant Kunj here over the weekend. The police claim to have seized two vehicles and two firearms from their possession.

Acting on a tip-off that two Uttar Pradesh-based criminals, Hansraj and Abdul Hakim, would pass by Vasant Kunj through Mahipalpur-Mehrauli Road in an Opel Astra car, a team led by Inspector Rajpal Dabas laid a trap and intercepted the vehicle that bore a fake Delhi Police sticker. The accused allegedly fired two rounds at the police, who fired in retaliation and overpowered the duo.

Alleged murderer arrested

NEW DELHI: A young man carrying a reward of Rs.25,000 on his head for alleged involvement in three gruesome murders at Rohtak in Haryana has been arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi police in Chandigarh.

The accused, Manoj, was also wanted in an extortion case registered by the Special Cell in which two of his accomplices were arrested earlier. Acting on a tip-off that he was in Chandigarh, the police arrested him.
