Trash lorries raise a stink

Staff Reporter

  • Trucks parked on Sampige Road for the third day in a row
  • Owner of the site identified for dumping demands higher price

BANGALORE: Garbage lorries that had lined up in front of Bangalore Mahanagara Palike's (BMP) West Zone office on Sampige Road were stranded for the third consecutive day on Wednesday.

This is because Bylappa, owner of the land identified by BMP for dumping at Mavallipura demanded Rs. 500 a lorry as against the agreed Rs. 200 a lorry. This had caused stench all around the West Zone office.

On Wednesday, garbage collection was hit in Rajajinagar, Mahalakshmipuram, Chamarajpet, Chickpet, Malleswaram, Gandhinagar and Yeshwanthpur and some auto-tippers that collected the waste clandestinely dumped it on vacant sites. Around 60 lorries loaded with 300 tonnes of garbage were stranded from Monday onwards as the proprietor of Ramkey Constructions, who is developing the scientific landfill for BMP at Mavallipura stopped entry to the landfill. According to sources in the BMP, this 300-metre approach road to the landfill is under litigation and authorities at Ramkey fear that allowing entry through this road might attract the wrath of the court. The BMP officials had requested Mr. Bylappa, owner of the land adjacent to the landfill, to allow dumping on his land for sometime. "But he is demanding more than double now and we cannot afford to pay him so much. We hope Commissioner K. Jairaj will intervene and work out a permanent solution to this problem," general secretary of the Bangalore Mahanagara Swachate Lorry Maalikara Mattu Guttigedarara Sangha S. Balasubramaniam said.
