Call to withdraw petition challenging reduction in power tariff to rural consumers

BANGALORE: The representatives of industries' associations on Wednesday urged the electricity companies (ESCOMs) to withdraw their petition challenging the State power regulator's tariff order in which the tariff for rural power consumers, including industries, has been reduced.

An interaction between the representatives of industrial associations and officials of the Department of Industries and Commerce was organised here by the Confederation of Industries and Traders Associations of Karnataka.

The Chairman of the Energy Committee of the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) M.G. Prabhakar said that implementing the power regulator's tariff order would give a boost to the development of rural industries. Most of the industries were not willing to shift to rural areas mainly owing to poor quality of power supply.

He said supplying quality power to rural areas would pave the way for industrialisation of rural areas. This would not only take care of unemployment problem, but would also lead to economic development. Besides, such a process would reduce migration of people to cities in search of employment.

Several participants expressed anger at the energy companies for frequent interruptions in power supply. Among them, the Chairman of the Peenya Industries Association, Srikanta Datta, alleged that the industries in the area were facing daily power cuts for two to three hours mostly owing to overloading of the power network. Such interruption in power supply was being experienced for the last three months.

S.R. Patil, MLC expressed his resentment over loadshedding in most of the villages in the Bagalkot district.
