    VISAKHAPATNAM: Armed with the grant of IIT centre, the Congress Government has now cast its eyes on an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) branch in the State.

    Stating this at an international seminar on ceramics `Ceratec-2007' here on Monday, Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy said a request had already been made to the Centre to give clearance for setting up the IIM in Visakhapatnam. Earlier, Dr. Reddy declared open the three-day seminar at the Andhra University College of Engineering (AUCE).

    Education district

    The Chief Minister said an education district would come up on the city outskirts on an area of 500 to 1,000 acres. International universities and premier institutes would be asked to set up centres there.

    He said a Bill in this regard would be tabled in the budget session.

    In a bid to soothe the ruffled feelings of people of North Andhra over the decision to set up IIT in Telangana, he said that AUCE would be developed on a par with IIT standards.

    Painting a rosy picture of industrialisation in and around Visakhapatnam, he said the city was set to emerge as an industrial hub.

    As part of the new industrial policy, several concessions were being offered to new industries.

    Expressing satisfaction over synergy of Andhra University, VSP and the industry for organising Ceratec-2007, he said such an initiative was a positive sign to put the State on forward march.

    Ceramic city

    In his welcome address, VSP Chairman and MD and organising committee chairman of Ceratec-2007 Y.

    Siva Sagar Rao said the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation was in the process of acquiring land for setting up a ceramic city near Sabbavaram.

    Earlier, the Chief Minister inaugurated an exhibition and released a souvenir and a book authored by AUCE Principal Allam Appa Rao.
