2.6 lakh children given polio drops in Mysore district

MYSORE: Of the 3.04 lakh children below the age of five in the district, 2.6 lakh were given oral pulse polio drops on Sunday as part of the first phase of nationwide Pulse Polio Programme for 2007.

The programme, which began at 8 a.m., concluded at 5 pm.

District Health Officer P.K. Srinivas said, "We have managed to achieve 85.5 per cent of the target." Of the 3,04,410 children below the age of five in the district, 95,675 live in the city.

"Of the 95,675 children targeted in the city, 68,852 have been administered oral polio drops, which is 72 per cent of the target," Health Officer of the Mysore City Corporation Nagaraj said.

Dr. Srinivas said that the drive would continue till January 10 with medical personnel visiting houses across the district to administer oral polio drops to children.

Mysore City Corporation Commissioner Chandrashekar said that children who were left out on Sunday would be covered in the next three days.

The second phase of the campaign in Mysore would be held on February 11, Dr. Srinivas said.

As many as 1,200 volunteers from various social and non-governmental organisations participated in the programme in the city. Similarly, 6,500 volunteers administered oral polio drops to children in rural areas of the district.

Mysore Zilla Panchayat president Rajamma inaugurated the programme by administering polio drops to children at the Maternity Hospital in V.V. Mohalla.

Deputy Commissioner Selva Kumar and Dr. Chandrashekar were present.
