UPA Government accused of appeasing minorities

Staff Correspondent

Religious heads, writers participate in `Viraat Hindu Samavesha'

MYSORE: Praveen Togadia, international general secretary of the Vishwa Hindu Parishat (VHP), on Sunday accused the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government led by the Congress of appeasing minorities with an eye on their votes.

Speaking at the "Viraat Hindu Samavesha" organised by the Sangh Parivar to mark the birth centenary of former Sarsanghchalak of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) M.S. Golwalkar at the Maharaja College Ground here, Mr. Togadia said while 90 per cent of Muslims were exercising their franchise, only 25 per cent of Hindus were casting their vote in elections. It was because of this, political parties were bent upon appeasing them.

He, however, clarified that he was not asking the Hindus to cast their vote in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), but to vote to any political party that safeguarded their interests. He urged the Hindus to remain united and raise their voice against atrocities on their community.

K. Prabhakar Bhat of the RSS said that terrorism was spreading to the southern parts of the country because of the apathy of successive governments.

Shivarathri Deshikendra Swamiji, Mummudi Chandrashekara Shivacharya Swamiji, Swami Jagadatmanandji, and Trinetra Mahanta Shivayogi Swamiji were among the religious heads who spoke.

Writer S.L. Bhyrappa felicitated Mr. Togadia by presenting him with a traditional Mysore turban. Former Vice-Chancellor of Kuvempu University K. Chidananda Gowda presided over the function.

Earlier, activists of the Sangh Parivar took out a procession in the city from the Gun House. Mummudi Chandrashekar Swamiji flagged off the procession.
