Kalam clears quota bill

NEW DELHI
: President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam has given his assent to the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Bill, 2006, which seeks to extend 27 per cent reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in Central higher educational institutions, barring minority establishments and those located in designated tribal areas.
As per the new law, reservations will not be applicable in Central educational institutions set up in tribal areas referred to in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, minority educational institutions referred to in Article 30 (1) and also institutions of excellence, research institutions, and institutions of national and strategic importance specified in the Schedule to the Act.
The Bill got Parliament's assent in the just concluded session.
