Aswini claims a double

BANGALORE: R. Aswini of Vidya Vahini College claimed a double on the second day of the Bangalore University inter-collegiate athletic championship at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium here on Wednesday. She won the discus throw with an effort of 20.73m and later bagged the 400m hurdles gold, clocking 1:15.3s.

On Tuesday, Shilpa of Mount Carmel College claimed three golds (in the 100m, high jump and long jump).

The results (winners only): Men: 200m: Md. Mudassir (Al-Ameen College) 22.2 secs; 400m hurdles: G.K. Aditya (Al-Ameen) 55.8s; Javelin throw: Nandish (Al-Ameen College) 50.80m; 20km walk: L. Rajashekar (Natl. College, B'Gudi) 2:22.58.0s; 800m: Chirag (Al-Ameen) 1:55.7s; Triple jump: Binoy Mathew (St. Joseph's) 13.80m; 5000m: M.N. Arun (RBANMS) 16.47s; High jump: T.P. Nagesh (MES) 1.75m; Discus throw: M. Siva (V.V. Puram College) 28.29m.

Women: Discus throw: R. Aswini (Vidya Vahini College) 20.73m; 200m: G. Bindu Rani (SBMJC) 25.3s; 400m hurdles: R. Aswini (Vidya Vahini College) 1:15.03s; 10,000m: M. Kala (Govt. Big win for FAPS

Frank Anthony Public School (FAPS) defeated Bangalore Higher Secondary School (BHSS) by 134 runs in a Himalaya Cup under-15 inter-school quarterfinal match that concluded here on Wednesday. Chasing 341 in its second innings, BHSS scored 207 for five in the stipulated 30-over second innings.

The scores: quarterfinals:

FAPS 377 for four in 55 overs and 185 for four in 30 overs (S. Sannan 62, K. Gandharv 51 n.o.) bt BHSS 221 in 45 overs (Karun Nair four for 20) and 207 for five in 30 overs (Balasubramanya 65, Varun Gowda 43).

Presidency School, Nandini Layout 191 in 48.1 overs and 199 in 29.3 overs (Shashindra 69, S. Rohith 62) lost to Presidency School, RT Nagar 267 for seven in 55 overs (Aman Raj 74, Akshay 74) and 124 for seven in 30 overs.

SJIHS 159 in 53.2 overs and 135 for eight in 30 overs lost to SJBHS 185 for nine in 55 overs (Sandeep four for 65) and 111 for three in 26.5 overs.

Bishop Cotton Boys' School 308 for eight in 55 overs and 147 in 30 overs bt VVS Sardar Patel HS 254 for six in 55 overs (D. Nishchal 89 n.o., Abhishek N. Shetty 89) and 131 in 23.5 overs (K.V. Siddarth 52).

Varsity athletics meet

The Bangalore University will conduct an All-India inter-university athletics championship at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium here from January 25 to 28. About 300 teams from all over India will participate.

Handball championship

The BEL Colony Youth Association (BCYA) will organise the Sri Rajkumar Memorial State level handball championship for men and women at the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Stadium, BEL Sports Club, Jalahalli from Jan. 10 to 13. All Affiliated units have to send in their entries on or before Jan. 8.

Chess tournament

The C.V. Raman Chess Club will conduct a monthly Children's chess tournament at the KNI Art gallery, 7th Block, Jayanagar on Jan. 7 in the under-8, under-10, under-12, under-14 and open categories. Karatekas' rich haul

Contestants from the Karnataka State Sports Karate Association (KSSKA) had a rich haul in the National championship conducted by the Sports Karate Federation of India at Chandigarh last week. They claimed 28 golds, 22 silvers and 71 bronzes in the meet.
