TIRUCHI : The underground drainage scheme being executed by the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board in the city under the National River Conservation Programme is nearing completion. It is expected to be partially commissioned by March next. A pending case over land acquisition for the sub-pumping station (SPS) on Vasudevan Street at Tiruvanaikovil may delay the commissioning of the scheme in the entire Srirangam zone of the Tiruchi Corporation by a few more months. Another aspect hampering the progress of the work is the delay in getting clearance from the Defence Ministry for laying sewer lines across a stretch of its land. The drainage network in the old city limits and a few other parts is expected to be ready for commissioning by March. The TWAD Board officials said work on the two main pumping stations (MPSs) at Othakadai (MPS 1) and near Anna Stadium (MPS 2) had already been completed, so also work on 30 of the 31 sub-pumping stations. Eight SPSs had been connected to the MPS 1 and the rest to MPS 2. The network has been established for providing 20,300 house service connections out of the total 23,775 planned. Already 2,295 connections have been handed over to the Corporation and the rest will be given in a phased manner.
