Rebels clash with security forces

Imphal: A heavy exchange of fire between security forces and rebels of the Manipur People's Army (MPA) was reported from Chandel district bordering Myanmar, officials said here on Saturday.

There was a gun battle at Ayang and Khengjoi Hill range, about 120 km southeast of here, between the sides on Friday but it was not immediately known if there were any casualties, they said.

There have been frequent skirmishes between insurgents and security forces after the latter launched Operation Khengjoi on December 5. Security forces had earlier said the insurgents had been driven out of their camps at some villages around Khengjoi block but village chiefs said the rebels came to these villages one or twice a month. — PTI
