Rallies in Kolkata

Staff Reporter

KOLKATA: Political parties, cutting across party lines, staged protests here on Saturday against the hanging of deposed Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.

Both Congress and Trinamool Congress organised rallies, with members sporting black badges as a mark of protest. Other outfits, such as the Socialist Unity Centre of India and Democratic Youth Federation of India, also organised protest rallies. An effigy of U.S. President George W. Bush was burnt in front of the American Centre.

Left Front Committee Chairman Biman Bose said that January 2 would be marked as "Protest Day" on behalf of the Left Front to condemn the hanging.
