BANGALORE: After the delay, the State Legislature session will now be held for 15 days from January 25. A decision to this effect was taken by the Cabinet which met here on Thursday.

Briefing reporters after the Cabinet meeting, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Basavaraj Horatti said there will be a joint session of both the Legislature houses on January 25.

It approved the Kaginele Development Authority Bill and decided to provide a grant of Rs. 3 crore a year for development of the religious centre. The Cabinet also decided to provide Rs. 12.76 crore for rehabilitation of three villages affected by the Narayanapura canal in Bagalkote and Hungund, Mr Horatti said.

The Minister said that it had been decided to implement a report by an expert committee headed by A. Vaidyanathan on the revival of credit cooperative societies. The committee, appointed by the Union Government, had come out with various suggestions including reducing government interference in the cooperative sector.

The State was expected to save about Rs. 469 crore a year with the implementation of the report. However, the decision would be conveyed to the Centre only after deliberations in this regard by a Cabinet sub-committee, he said.

The Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister had been authorised to decide on the recommendations with respect to making nominations to these societies, Mr. Horatti said.

The Cabinet has decided to dismiss Fisheries Assistant Director T. Lokanath for submitting a false caste certificate. It also decided to punish Ganapaiah Holla, principal of the Sanskrit College in Gokarna, with forced retirement for "misappropriating" funds to the tune of Rs. 23 lakh, Mr. Horatti said.

A proposal by a private firm to set up a sugar factory at a cost of Rs. 94.11 crore in Basavana Bagewadi has been approved. The Cabinet had also decided against floating fresh tenders for purchasing bicycles to be given to the boys from poor families studying in 8th standard. The purchase would be made from the same companies which supplied bicycles earlier to the girl students, Mr. Horatti said.

A World Kannada Meet would he held in Belgaum from February 23, he said.
