Bangalore: The State Government has made fixing of speed governors mandatory for new vehicles such as maxi cabs and buses run by education institutions, and private service vehicles and private stage carriages from December 1. Contract carriages, vehicles having all-India tourist permits and goods vehicles having RLW of 3,000 kg and above, registering after May 1, 2007, will have to be fitted with speed governors, according to a press release from the office of the Transport Commissioner said. All such vehicles, which had been registered, should be fitted with speed governors when they come for renewal of fitness certificate, within 12 months with effect from May 1, 2007, the release said. The commissioner has requested transport vehicle operators in the State to fix speed governors within the stipulated time. The Andhra Pradesh Government has also made it mandatory to fix speed governors to vehicles of educational institutions, light commercial vehicles (goods vehicles) and maxi cabs (passenger vehicles) in Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Nalagonda and Chittoor districts. Vehicles from outside Andhra Pradesh operating in these areas and also vehicles from Karnataka taking pilgrims to Tirupati and Sri Kalahasthi should have speed governors limiting the speed at 65 km per hour.
