JD(S) national council meeting on January 28, 29

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: Close on the heels of revoking the suspension of its 39 MLAs including Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, the Janata Dal (Secular) headed by the former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda has decided to hold a national council meeting in Bangalore on January 28 and 29.

The last time the party held its national council meeting in Bangalore was in November 2005.

The meeting will be held at the Palace Grounds. The party is expected to assert its position in the wake of the rebel faction holding a parallel meeting of the national council and removing Mr. Gowda from the post of the party's national president.

Party symbol

Party sources said that despite the above episode of rebellion, it was not legally possible for the rebels to either claim the party symbol or get it frozen.

Pro-Deve Gowda leaders said that according to the recent policy document brought out by the Election Commission, only that splinter group which had majority of the party functionaries and the elected members would get the party symbol. The Gowda faction claimed that it had the support of a majority of the party functionaries and elected members.

"The main purpose of holding a national council meeting in Delhi on December 24 was to prove that we (Gowda faction) have the support of majority of the functionaries and elected representatives," they told The Hindu. According to them, 47 of the 55 national council members are with Mr. Deve Gowda.
