13 polio cases detected

New Delhi: Thirteen fresh polio cases have been reported in the country, including one in Delhi, taking the total number of afflicted children to 610 this year. Last year, 66 polio cases were reported.

"Out of the 13 cases, 12 are from Uttar Pradesh," a National Polio Programme officer told PTI on Saturday.

In Delhi, eight-month-old Raja was detected with the paralytic disease. A resident of a jhuggi cluster at Rohini in the northwest district, the child had taken four-seven doses of polio vaccine.

With this, the total number of polio cases in Delhi went up to six.

Out of the 610 cases reported this year, 501 alone are from Uttar Pradesh alone, followed by Bihar with 50, Haryana (16), Uttaranchal (13), Punjab (7), Maharashtra (5), Gujarat (3), Madhya Pradesh (3), Assam (2), and one each from Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal and Jharkhand. — PTI
