Double for Umesh and Mandakini

BANGALORE: H.K. Umesh and Mandakini Deshpande bagged a double each in the State veterans' table tennis tournament held at the Indiranagar Club here. Umesh won the 40-plus men's singles and doubles titles, the latter with Bona Thomas John, while Mandakini won the women's singles and took the doubles title too in partnership with Manjula.

The results:

Men: 40-plus: Singles: Final: H.K.Umesh bt Rajesh Kamble 12-10, 11-8, 9-11, 11-6. Doubles: Umesh & Bona Thomas John bt Mahesh Nayak & Anthony Chang 7-11, 8-11, 11-9, 11-7, 11-7.

50-plus: Final: K.A. Udayshankar bt N.V. Raman 11-3, 11-6, 11-9.

60-plus: Final: G.C. Kanchan bt M.A. Krishnaswamy 9-11, 11-6, 11-8, 11-9.

Women: Singles: Final: Mandakini bt B. Manjula 11-8, 6-11, 11-8, 5-11, 11-8.

Doubles: Mandakini & Manjula bt Rekha Chandrashekar & Bhavna Herne 11-5, 11-9, 11-8.

Presidency School teams in final

Presidency School RT Nagar defeated St. Joseph's Boys High School (SJBHS) by an innings and 72 runs here in a Parle Cup under-17 inter-school tournament semifinal match.

Presidency, after posting 272 for eight in the stipulated 55-over first innings, restricted SJBHS to 133 for nine in its first innings and enforced the follow-on. In the stipulated 30-over second innings, SJBHS could only muster 67 for five.

In the other semifinal, Presidency School Bangalore-96 defeated Frank Anthony Public School (FAPS) by 60 runs.

The scores (semifinals): Presidency School, RT Nagar 272 for eight in 55 overs bt SJBHS 133 for nine in 55 overs and 67 for five in 30 overs.

Presidency School, B'lore-96 169 in 51.3 overs and 165 for four in 30 overs (K. Sashindra 43, S. Rohit 41, T. Ashwin 40 n.o.) bt FAPS 152 for nine in 55 overs and 122 for seven in 30 overs (Rupin 44, Ajay Singh four for 30).

Big win for JEM FC

JEM FC (Mangalore) blanked Brothers Uchil 5-0 in a `A' division football league tie, organised by the Dakshina Kannada District Football Association for the Ahmad Master memorial Trophy, at Mangalore on Thursday.

While Riyaz opened the scoring for JEM in the 10th minute of the first half, Suhaib doubled the lead nine minutes later. Sajan (sixth minute of the second half), Shah Nawaz (15th minute) and a second goal by Riyaz a minute later completed the rout.

Softball trials

The Karnataka Amateur Softball Association will conduct trials to select the State men's and women's teams for the 28th senior National championship to be held at Dewas (Madhya Pradesh) in January. Trials will be held at the National College grounds in Jayanagar (Bangalore )on December 23 from 7.15 a.m.

Ball badminton tournament

Sahyadri Sports Club will conduct a State-level ball badminton tournament for men and women at the Vivekananda School ground in Bangalore from December 23 to 25.
