Lanco set to bag mega project

Emerges lowest bidder for Sasan

HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad-based Lanco Group has emerged as the lowest bidder for the first 4,000 MW ultra mega power project in the country to be set up at Sasan in Madhya Pradesh.

Lanco, along with its U.K.-based partner Globeleq, quoted Rs. 1.19 a unit for the project, the first in the series of seven planned by the Central Government while Reliance quoted Rs. 1.29 and Tata Power Rs. 1.41, Lanco Group Chairman, L. Madhusudhan Rao, said.

In a release, he said the project formed part of the proposed ultra mega power plants with super critical technology planned by the Union Power Ministry along with CEA and Power Finance Corporation to ensure capacity addition of 28,000 MW in seven to eight year with an estimated Rs. 1.25 lakh crore. The location of the project in central Indian would enable distribution of power throughout the country.

Lanco could quote lower tariff because of the size and capacity of the project that was without much risk and had huge coal blocks, he said adding with the new project Lanco would have close to 10,000 MW of total capacity including 520 MW of operating capacity.
