INDORE: Awfully low scores were the order of the day in the rapidfire pistol event as Vijay Kumar won the men's 25m event in the 50th National shooting championship at the Reoti Ranges here on Monday. Vijay Kumar himself was way off target, qualifying for the final with a total of 575, while his fellow Army teammate, Pemba Tamang, was 562 going into the final. The last shooter to make it to the final, Harpeet Singh of Navy, made it with an abysmal 548. There was slight malfunctioning in the target motors, but there was no reason for shooters of calibre to get disturbed till the machines were rectified.
Distant second
Vijay shot the five-match series at 45.8, 48.0, 47.9, 48.8 to total 765.5. Tamang was a distant second with a final score of 189.8 for a total of 751.8. Army completed a 1-2-3 finish as Ram Kishan edged out Maharashtra's Ronak Pandit.
Jung wins
Later in the evening, Samaresh Jung became the champion of champions in air pistol. In the eight-player field drawn from the 16 finalists in men's and women's events, Jung's vast experience saw him clinch the title and cash award of Rs. 15,000. Sonia and Anisa were the two women in the field, but were eliminated first, before Jung and Deepak Sharma made the final. Sharma made the charge with a 10.4 in the first of the three shots final.
