Justice done

The death sentence awarded to former Assistant Commissioner of Police R.P. Tyagi by a fast track court in Delhi for torturing a youth to death in 1987 (Dec. 16) meets the ends of justice. It is the turn of a person who was supposed to bring criminals to justice to pay for his crime after 19 long years. This should send a message to all those in power that no one can escape punishment. The wheels of justice grind slowly, but they grind exceedingly fine.

J. Eden Alexander,
Thanjavur

It has taken 19 years for Mahender Kumar's family to get justice. I wish the court had imposed tougher sentences on ACP (retired) K.P. Singh who refused to lodge an FIR, and Inspector Tej Singh who framed an incorrect record. Police officers need to respect the law. It is because of the loopholes in law and administration that such crimes take place. I am sure there are many Tyagis who have gone unpunished. And there will be many more if the law does not deal with them strictly.

Abida Syeda,
New Delhi

Policemen who kill those in their custody are nothing but terrorists in uniform. The police have so terrorised the people that they do not like to go to a station to lodge a complaint. The outlook of the police, who believe that they are a law unto themselves, needs to change. They should be trained to be servants of the people.

Satbir Singh Bedi,
New Delhi

The judgment is a landmark one. Police officers are expected to be courteous and reasonable in treating the prisoners. Unfortunately in India, many policemen believe they are above the law. I hope the death sentence will act as a warning to others who believe in thrashing persons in their custody.

B.S. Ganesh,
Bangalore
