Student's death triggers tension in Kuttiyadi

KOZHIKODE: Tension prevailed at Vattoli National High School and in the Kuttiyadi area in the district on Tuesday evening following the death of a girl student after Class X students were administered tetanus injection a couple of weeks ago.

The administration of injections triggered protests in the area after the students developed complications, and were laid down with fever and admitted to hospital last month. Roopisha, 15, who was admitted to the Medical College Hospital here on Tuesday morning died in the evening.

The protestors destroyed classrooms, set fire to the school and threw stones at policemen. Two policemen were injured in stone-throwing. A procession was taken out in the Kuttiyadi area.

The United Democratic Front has called for a hartal in Vadakara taluk from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday. The Kerala Students' Union has called for an education bandh on Wednesday.
