NEW DELHI: The Samajwadi Party (SP) on Friday demanded the recall of Uttar Pradesh Governor T.V. Rajeswar, alleging that he was conspiring against the Mulayam Singh Yadav Government in connivance with the Congress. During his visit to New Delhi last Sunday Mr. Rajeswar met Home Minister Shivraj Patil and apprised him of the law and order situation in the State. A delegation of SP members of Parliament met President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and submitted a memorandum demanding that the Governor be called back as his actions did not befit the constitutional position he held. "The Governor, on several occasions, has gone out of the way to criticise the State administration and leaders. He has converted the Raj Bhavan into Congress headquarters," said SP general secretary Amar Singh, who led the delegation that comprised, among others, Ram Gopal Yadav, Ramji Lal Suman, Mohan Singh, Jaya Prada, Jaya Bachchan and Shahid Siddiqui. Mr. Singh wanted to know why there was no demand for imposition of President's rule in Gujarat where reportedly skeletal remains of riot victims were found In the Home Ministry's latest National Crime Records Bureau report, it was stated that law and order in Uttar Pradesh was better than several other States. "Whenever incidents occurred, the Mulayam Singh Government has brought them under control swiftly." Referring to the violence during the recent local elections, he said they were conducted under an independent commission. "Had the State Government any role, how come the SP's rival parties, including the BJP and Congress, did well?" Mr. Singh said the Governor was not appointed in consultation with the State Government as recommended by the Sarkaria Commission.
