Corrections and Clarifications

  • The names of two former Union Finance Ministers were misspelt in the report "Centre committed to unlocking PSU potential" (December 6, 2006). "John Mathai and Chintamani Deshmukh" should have been John Maththai and Chintaman (Dwarakanath) Deshmukh.

  • In the report "Indian women [Sania Mirza and Shikha Uberoi] cruise into semifinals" ("Sport", December 6, 2006), it was stated that India will take on China. A reader points out that it is incorrect as China lost to Uzbekistan in the quarter-finals. Hence, India will take on the Uzbeks. The Sports Desk clarifies that it was assumed that China would beat Uzbekistan and meet India. This line appeared only in the early editions.

  • In "Nafees shines" ("Sport", December 1, 2006), it was stated that man of the match [Shariar] Nafees smashed his third consecutive one-day international hundred. A reader points out that it should have been his third consecutive hundred against Zimbabwe.

  • With reference to the clarification yesterday, on a detail in the column "Second Thoughts" (Literary Review, December 3, 2006, page 5), Jeff Jerome, Curator, Poe House and Museum, Baltimore, Maryland, U.S. says: "There are two graves of Edgar Allan Poe in the Westminster graveyard. The original grave is in the rear of the graveyard. In 1875, his body was moved to its present location at the entrance of the graveyard. Hence the two graves. When Poe died in 1849, he was buried in his grandfather's plot in the rear of the historic graveyard. Despite gossip and erroneous information, we are certain that Poe's body was removed properly in 1875 and is resting under the monument at the entrance of the graveyard. His wife, Virginia and his aunt, Maria Clemm also are buried with him. This was done to place him in a more prominent spot in the graveyard. There is no doubt that Poe is under the monument and hasn't stirred since 1875."
