Karnataka holds the upper hand

Principal Correspondent

Mysore : Karnataka held the upper hand as its bowlers, backed by agile fielding, restricted Haryana to 176 for six at the second day's close of the Ranji Trophy Elite Division Group `A' match at the Gangotri Glades Stadium here on Saturday.

Earlier in the morning, Karnataka's tail wagged with Vinay Kumar chipping in a 48 to help the host score 371 after Thilak Naidu failed to add to his overnight 84.

Bad start

Haryana suffered a bad start as opener Sumit Sharma fell for a blob, snicking Vinay Kumar. And after lunch, left-arm spinners — veteran Sunil Joshi and rookie K.P. Appanna — struck at regular intervals on a pitch that has become progressively slow with the odd low bounce.

Joshi prised out Sunny Singh, who prodded forward and watched Akhil grab the edge at first slip.

Brilliant catch

Appanna then stepped in from the Hunsur Road End and snapped up Siddarth Verma and Shafiq Khan, who was brilliantly caught by a diving Bharat Chipli at second slip after the batsman slashed hard.

Southpaw Deepak Joon (43) dropped anchor and along with allrounder Joginder Sharma, tried to build a partnership.

Joginder, however, failed to counter third seamer B. Akhil's inswing and lost his stumps.

Akhil struck again as Joon flashed hard and edged.

In the end, it was left to the wicketkeeper-batsman Mahesh Rawat and Sachin Rana to prevent further alarms for their team as they mixed dour defence with the odd full-blooded drive.

Haryana is still 195-runs adrift off Karnataka's total and will look at edging past the follow-on mark of 221 on the morrow.
