NEW DELHI: Tanmay Srivastav became the sixth player from Uttar Pradesh to make a first class debut in two seasons but his temperament suggested he had spent enough time on the circuit to understand the nuances of the game. Tanmay's unbeaten 72 and his unfinished partnership with the belligerent Praveen Kumar carried Uttar Pradesh to 207 for five in reply to Delhi's 299, on the second day of the Ranji Trophy Elite group match at the Ferozeshah Kotla here on Saturday.
Plenty of potential
Having made waves at the junior level, Tanmay gave glimpses of his potential with an innings that highlighted his ability to learn and adapt. "I just concentrated on playing ball to ball," said the 18-year-old with a smile. With the onus on staying at the wicket, he obviously had a specific role to play and performed it well. Resuming at 257 for six, Delhi folded up for 299 with Aakash Chopra, 128 overnight, compiling 150 off 311 balls with 15 fours before becoming the ninth batsman to fall. Uttar Pradesh suffered from a shaky start as Shivakant Shukla, Ravikant Shukla, Rizwan Shamshad and Rohit Prakash failed to apply themselves. Skipper Jyoti Yadav looked in good nick but fell leg-before to Nanda. Yadav was not happy with the decision, indicating repeatedly that he had played the ball.
Common desire
Tanmay and Praveen are batsmen of contrasting nature, but they had the common desire to take the fight to the Delhi camp. Praveen was involved in a fascinating duel with left-arm spinner Rahul Sanghvi, who tempted him with flighted deliveries. Praveen responded by smashing three huge sixes as Tanmay watched from the other end and dropped anchor. Praveen, let off once each by Sanghvi and Rajat Bhatia, has so far hit five fours and three sixes in his 72-ball essay while the left-handed Tanmay has batted 166 balls and hit ten fours.
