Malathi is new Home Secretary

CHENNAI: Special Commissioner and Commissioner of Commercial Taxes S. Malathi is the new Home Secretary.

The 1977-batch Indian Administrative Service officer replaces Pavan Raina, who retired from service on Thursday.

Project Director of Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project and Ex-officio Special Secretary to Government (Health and Family Welfare) T. Jacob has been transferred and posted as Commissioner of Commercial Taxes. — Special Correspondent

Assembly Marshal appointed

CHENNAI: R. Seenivasan, an ex-serviceman, has been appointed Marshal of the State Assembly Secretariat.

An official release said here on Thursday that the appointment was made under Rule 17 (a) (i) of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Secretariat Employees' Service Rules. — Special Correspondent

36 students fall ill after noon meal

Krishnagiri: As many as 36 students of the BRG Madhepalli Middle School at Bargur near here took ill after consuming the noon meal and were admitted to the Bargur Government Hospital on Thursday. The police said 181 students had consumed the meal. Those affected were rushed to the government hospital. — Staff Reporter

Fuel price cut hailed

CHENNAI: The reduction in petrol and diesel prices has revealed the Union Government's concern towards the poor and the downtrodden, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president M. Krishnasswamy said on Thursday. In a statement here, he said the move was expected to contain inflation at 5 per cent and prices of essential commodities were likely to go down. — Special Correspondent

Appeal to people

CHENNAI: The Government on Thursday appealed to the public not to believe media reports which create confusion about welfare programmes including distribution of free colour TV sets, gas stove, and fallow land to landless farmers. The official statement on these welfare measures released by the Government alone would present the true picture, said a press release issued by the Government. — Special Correspondent

Chennai: The results of the first year B.Sc (Nursing) degree course examinations of the Tamil Nadu Dr M.G.R Medical University, Chennai, held in August, will be available online at www.tnmmu.ac.in, a press release said. — Special Correspondent

Deadline extended

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Open University has extended till December 30 the last date for submission of application forms for admission to all programmes except certificate programmes for the academic year 2006-07, a press release here said. — Special Correspondent

New research

centre for MKU

Chennai: The State Government has sanctioned Rs 1 crore to start a Centre for Educational Research at Madurai Kamaraj University to promote research on education, a press release said.

The Centre would start functioning with immediate effect. — Special Correspondent

SFI members stage demonstration

THANJAVUR: Members of Students Federation of India (SFI) on Thursday staged a demonstration near Panagal Building protesting against the admission of students by a private college claiming that it had Deemed University status.

They demanded that the money collected from students should be returned. They appealed to the Government to nationalise the college.

Effigy burnt

THANJAVUR: Thirty members of Dalit Panthers of India were arrested by the police here on Thursday when they burnt the effigy of Mani Shankar Aiyer, Union Minister for Panchayati Raj. They were protesting against the Minister's invitation to Mahinda Rajapakse, President of Sri Lanka, to his (minister's) daughter's marriage held recently at New Delhi.

They said that Mr. Iyer had "insulted the Tamils" by inviting Mr. Rajapakse to the marriage.

New branch opened

KARUR: Value-added schemes in the UCO Bank's portfolio would help it reach out to more customers in the coming years, the bank's Chairman and Managing Director, V. Sridar, said while declaring open a new branch here on Thursday. "This is the bank's 72nd branch in the State and 1,903rd in all,'' he said.Mr. Sridar pointed out that for the first time, the new branch would function with the ATM and Core Banking Facility facilities and in addition was net banking compatible, from day one.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The water level in the Mettur dam stood at 115.77 feet against its capacity of 120 feet on Thursday.

The inflow was 6,560 cusecs and the discharge, 6,984 cusecs. - Staff Reporter

Move hailed

ERODE: All India Trade Union Congress, Erode, has welcomed the fuel price reduction. In a statement, AITUC District General Secretary E. M. Appusamy has said that the reduction will benefit a lot of people.

AITUC has also asked for supplying fuel to auto rickshaws at a subsidised price, arguing that the present reduction will not help them a great deal as they will not be able to pass on the benefit to the commuters.

Power subsidy

ERODE: Powerloom weavers who have hitherto not availed themselves of the power subsidy granted by the State Government can do so in a simple manner.

The weavers can either handover the application at the office of the Assistant Director of Handlooms and Textile, Erode, or walk into the nearest weavers' cooperative society.

The weavers will have to also submit photocopies of their family card and power consumption card along with their application, says R. Murugesan, Assistant Director of Handlooms and Textiles, Erode.

Programme concludes

SALEM: The 15-day training programme on drawing organised by the Government Museum concluded here recently.

A release said president of the Rotary Club of Salem Tarai Kumaravel presented the certificates to the participants of the programme. More than 200 students and women attended the programme. Curator of the Museum J. Mullai Arasu and Drawing teacher Amalu also spoke. - Staff Reporter

Exhibition of lamps

SALEM: A special exhibition of lamps in connection with the Karthigai festival is on at the Poompuhar sales showroom since November 24.

More than 500 varieties of brass lamps and panchaloha lamps are on the display.

Re-totalling of marks

SALEM: Private candidates who have appeared for the SSLC/Matriculation/Anglo-Indian examinations during September and October 2006 can apply for re-totalling of marks.

The application for re-totalling can be obtained from the Chief Educational offices and District Educational offices from December 1 to 6.

The fee for re-totalling: for language subjects with two papers Rs. 305 and for subjects with one paper Rs. 205. The application forms along with a demand draft for the fee drawn in favour of the Director, Directorate of Government Examinations, Chennai - 6, photocopy of the marksheet and a self-addressed envelope should be sent to the Office of the Deputy Director, Government Examinations, Coimbatore - 1 within December 7. More information can be had from the Chief Educational office.

House burgled

Nagercoil: A four-member gang burgled the residence of a finance firm owner at Karungal near here on Thursday.

According to police sources, the culprits barged into the house of Mathiyas of Devicode and stole 200 sovereigns of gold ornaments and Rs.1 lakh in cash after assaulting him and his wife.
