MANGALORE: The 220 MW third power unit at the nuclear power generating station at Kaiga, Karwar, is likely to be commissioned in January, 2007, according to G. Nageswara Rao, station director, Kaiga Generating Station. He was speaking to presspersons on the sidelines of a seminar on "Applications of radioisotopes and radiation technology," organised by Mangalore University, National Association for Applications of Radioisotopes and Radiation in Industry (NAARRI) and Board of Radiation and Isotope Technology here on Wednesday. Mr. Rao said that the fourth 220 MW capacity unit at the station was in the advanced stage of construction. It was likely to be commissioned eight months later. The first two units (220 MW each) at the station were in operation for the last six years. Mr. Rao said that now each unit at the station was producing 155 MW of power. "Both units are performing exceedingly well with the total availability factor of about 92 per cent. At present, we are operating at 70 per cent of the rated capacity." Mr. Rao said that the first two units were built at an estimated cost of Rs. 2,900 crore. The third and fourth units would also cost the same amount. Later addressing the seminar, he said that power produced from Kaiga station was distributed among Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. The country was self-reliant in construction, operation and maintenance of pressurised heavy water reactors.
