HASSAN: Deputy Commissioner Ashwathanarayana Gowda held a meeting here on Tuesday with farmers and insurance officials on the payment of crop insurance. The farmers' claims have not been settled for three years from 2003 to 2005.

Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha president Kodihalli Chandrashekar, Superintendent of Police Panduranga Rane, farmers' leader Mahesh Gowda and several hundreds attended the meeting.

Mr. Gowda told The Hindu that he had directed Joint Director for Agriculture to prepare a list of all farmers who had paid the premium for crop insurance.

Drought factor

Hassan district had been reeling under drought for three years in a row. While calculating crop insurance, the five-year crop yield average was taken.

As the district had been reeling under drought for three years, it was decided to take the average crop yield of two years. In Hassan, farmers grew potato a rain-fed crop. So, while calculating insurance premium, potato growers should be consulted by the insurance company, he said. The Joint Director of Agriculture would prepare the list accordingly and it would be sent to insurance company through district administration, he added.
