Puducherry: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy has expressed anguish over the Government-owned textile mills, spinning corporations and the Cooperative Sugar Mill here continuing to suffer losses. He said that, however, the administration was meeting their budgetary requirements to ensure that workers faced no hardship or rendered jobless.

Handing over title deeds of house sites to 56 industrial workers in the Integrated Housing Colony at Gandhi Nagar near here on Monday, he said that as many as 234 houses were allotted to the industrial workers (on an extent of 4.49 hectares) in 1957. There had been demand from the allottees that they should be entitled to buildings as well as the sites. While in the first instance, the allottees were given deeds for the buildings, the Government had now got approval of the Union Housing Ministry to entitle the allottees to the sites as well. He said that although only 56 workers were givendeeds now, the administration would take a decision in respect of the remaining allottees. The allottees could now make plans to rebuild the houses according to their requirements. Mr. Rangasamy claimed that it was intention of the Government to ensure that Puducherry emerged a model State. Several major schemes like Special Economic Zone and development of port would be implemented soon to boost economy of the Union Territory.

Health and Labour Minister E. Valsaraj, who presided, said that the Government had issued an order in October to prevent child labour in Puducherry. Already necessary machinery had been put in place to take action against those employing children in shops and establishments, or using them as domestic servants. Secretary to Labour Department A.C. Verma and Labour Commissioner S. Sundaravadivelou also spoke.
