Demands galore at first council meeting

Call for making Tiruchengode Municipality the best in State

TIRUCHENGODE: Demands related to water supply, mosquito menace, breakage of water pipes, alternative site for leather shandy, fly menace at municipal dump yard - among others, dominated the Tiruchengode Municipality's first council meeting on Monday.

`Work together'

As the council began, chairman R. Natesan urged the councillors to work together. "Let us keep our political differences aside as we begin the first meeting. Inside the Council, we are one, and as a family let us try to serve those who have voted for us. And, when we work we shall do so with the aim of making Tiruchengode Municipality the best in Tamil Nadu."

After he finished, the minutes of the first meeting were placed before the Council for approval.

When the minute on legal disputes regarding tax collection came up for discussion, councillor of ward 1 K. Madeshwaran said that many a resident had filed cases on disputes, which ought to be solved at the earliest.

The chairman assured him that all litigants would be brought together for a discussion, and if possible a direction from court could be obtained.

On a point tabled regarding water supply, councillor T.N. Paramasivam of ward 25 said the leakage in drinking water pipes was so much that it needed a separate team to arrest the seepage. The council then gave its approval sanctioning Rs. 50,000 to arrest leakage in pipes near Pallipalayam Bridge, Vaikaal Road, SPB Colony, Kootappalli Colony, Jeeva Nagar and Rajagoundampalayam.

The increasing dog menace found its echo in this meeting as well. Councillors unanimously asked the civic body to initiate measures to stop the menace. "We understand that the municipality is not supposed to kill dogs. If there's no other alternative, let's construct a pound within municipality office for the dogs and the safety of residents," said Mr. Paramasivam.

Councillor A. Easwaran of ward 16 sought shifting of leather shandy. "The shandy pollutes groundwater. The stench is also unbearable. The civic body should find an alternative site for the shandy." He also wanted the local body to stop unauthorised slaughtering of cattle.

Garbage collection

Other councillors highlighted issues such as faulty streetlights, absence of water for public convenience complexes and lack of garbage collection on a regular basis in their wards.

Mr. Natesan assured the members that their problem would be looked into. Municipal commissioner T. Kumar and other officials attended the meeting.
