MADURAI: The State Government has allotted Rs.20 crore for the `Varumun Kappom' scheme through which 9,000 health camps will be conducted in all districts, Health Secretary V.K. Subburaj said on Sunday.

He was speaking at a function here to release a magazine on issues related to medical tests.

Mr. Subburaj said the camps would begin soon. They would not be like routine camps, which were a one-day affair. Detailed medical reports would be prepared for all persons undergoing the tests. This would help to create a `disease profile' of people. The Government has sanctioned funds for supplying semi-auto analyser equipment to 385 primary health centres in the first phase. Once these are available, blood tests and other investigations could be carried out in the centres. Regional diagnostic centres were being established in seven districts, including Thiruvannamalai, Ramanathapuram and Virudhunagar. These centres will be inaugurated next month, and the staff members were being trained.

As for the vacancies in government hospitals, Mr. Subburaj said clearance was given for appointing 12,000 technical staff, and 5,000 had already been recruited. Furthermore, the process of appointing 700 laboratory technicians for primary health centres, taluk hospitals and medical college hospitals was under way.

Referring to the alarming incidence of diabetes, the Health Secretary said 3.5 crore people in the country were `known diabetics', and a study in Chennai revealed that 16 per cent of the population were diabetics.
