SALEM: To highlight the importance of `child-friendly anganwadis' amid the stakeholders, representatives from various child welfare and non-governmental organisations, women's forum and educational institutions observed the `Anganwadi Day' by taking out an awareness rally here on Tuesday.

These members stressing the need for creating awareness among the public and parents about the essential components and services of anganwadis in moulding a child's health and nutrition particularly among the BPL families in towns and villages, insisted that like any other day of importance, November 21 in every calendar year also should be observed as `Anganwadi Day.'

The rally being organised here by the Community Services Guild in association with Tamil Nadu Forum for Creche and Child Care Services, was to focus on the advocacy programmes for the cause of young and poor child.

The rally also insisted on the need for renovating anganwadi centres into child- friendly ones, reinforcing the basic components such as the pre-school education, health and nutrition. The role of panchayats in child development also was stressed.

The rights of children, development of a pro-active mechanism to monitor, recognition of `anganwadi' workers and to encourage and enhance the community participation in its maintenance were the other issues that also should be taken into account. According to Mothers, members of the self-help groups and anganwadi workers also joined the social workers.
