Petitions panel coming tomorrow

TIRUCHI: The Petitions Committee of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly will visit the district on November 22. Led by its chairman, A. Chakrapani, the team will conduct a review meeting at Kalaiarangam.

Girl dies in accident

A 17-year-old girl was killed and nine others sustained injuries when a State Transport Corporation bus they were travelling in collided head on with a lorry on the Tiruchi-Madurai National Highway near Soriampatti in the district on Monday. The deceased has been identified as Sabitha (17) of Madurai. The bus was bound for Kanyakumari from Vellore. Sabitha was killed on the spot, while the others including the bus driver, Thangaraj, and the lorry driver sustained injuries. The injured were admitted to a private hospital here.

In another incident, a retired teacher was fatally knocked down by a TSTC bus at Manikandam near here on Monday. Thangaraj was riding a bicycle when the bus hit him from behind killing him on the spot. The bus driver, Parasuraman, has been cited as the accused.

Forum plea

The `Thennindhia Nugarvor Padhukappu Kulumam' has urged the State government to cancel the licence of share autorickshaws that carry passengers more than the stipulated limit. It also urged the government to seize those autos plying without obtaining valid permits. A resolution to this effect was adopted at the Kulumam's monthly executive committee meeting held here recently.

It wanted the local bodies to take steps on a war footing to repair the roads, which were damaged owing to the rain. It appealed to the railway authorities to close the unmanned level crossings in the State as a precautionary measure to prevent accidents.

Mettur level

The level at the Mettur dam stood at 111.82 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Monday. The inflow was 13,049 cusecs, and the discharge 100 cusecs.
