HCU student commits suicide

Staff Reporter

P G student was preparing for first semester exams

HYDERABAD : A first-year post-graduate student of the Hyderabad Central University (HCU) at Gachibowli who attempted suicide by consuming poison in her hostel room on the campus late on Thursday night, died while undergoing treatment in Apollo Hospitals at Jubilee Hills on Friday morning.

Twenty-two-year-old Ashima Dhawan of Delhi, an M.Sc. Biotechnology student, began vomiting minutes after she gulped down some poisonous chemical. Her roommate Asha Baruwa, with the help of other inmates of the hostel, rushed her to a health centre on the campus, from where she was asked to be taken to Apollo Hospitals as her condition was serious, police said.

Her family members, who flew in from Delhi on Friday morning, said they were clueless about the incident. Chandanagar Inspector M. Madhusudhan Reddy said the police was exploring whether Ashima's alleged secret marriage to an MBA student in Delhi had any connection with the suicide.
