City roads project back on track

Special Correspondent

Cabinet sub-committee reconstituted

Thiruvananthapuram: The Government has activated the institutional mechanism for the City Roads Improvement Project in a bid to remove the hurdles and get it back on the rails. The reconstituted Cabinet sub-committee for the development of the capital region reviewed the project at its first meeting on Saturday. The Kerala Road Fund Board is scheduled to meet on November 20.

The executive committee headed by the Public Works Minister and the empowered committee chaired by the Chief Secretary have also been activated. Government officials involved with the project said moves were on to extend the contract between the Kerala Road Fund Board (KRFB) and the Thiruvananthapuram Road Development Company Limited (TRDCL) beyond the date of expiry on November 15.

Efforts have been initiated to expedite land acquisition and transfer. A delivery schedule is being worked out. The delay in acquiring land has been the major impediment for the project, which envisages the widening and reconstruction of 44 km of roads in the city. While the Government had agreed to hand over the entire land needed for the project by November 2004, hardly one fourth of the requirement was transferred to the contractors in the two years hence.

The monitoring committees and the KRFB have been dormant over the last six months even as the contract was drawing to a close.
