Compensation demanded for victims of STF torture

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: A `Right to Life' conference for the victims of torture unleashed by the Special Task Force (STF) during the search for sandalwood bandit Veerappan, has demanded the payment of compensation of Rs. 5 crore each by the Tamil Nadu and Karnataka Governments to the victims as per the findings of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

The conference, held on Friday, urged the investigation team comprising police officials of senior ranks who have not worked in Karnataka or Tamil Nadu to be constituted to identify police officials who were responsible for the human rights violations against these people during the hunt for Veerappan.

The conference was organised on behalf of the campaign for rehabilitation of STF victims by the People's Watch, Tamil Nadu Tribal People Association, Peoples Union for Civil Liberties, Soco Trust and SICRAM.
