Davydenko wins Paris Masters

PARIS: Nikolay Davydenko of Russia routed Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 on Sunday to win the Paris Masters tennis tournament — his fifth title of the season.

It was the second Masters final that the 17th-seeded Hrbaty had lost after Cedric Pioline's win at Monte Carlo in 2000.

Dominik Hrbaty qualified for the final after German Tommy Haas retired in their semifinal clash to drop out of the Masters Cup race.

Hrbaty was leading 6-4, 1-0 when Haas, who needed to win the title here to qualify for the year-end event, withdrew, suffering from gastroenteritis.

Haas's misfortune means American James Blake fills the last slot for the Masters Cup, starting on November 12 in Shanghai.

Blake joins Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Davydenko, Ivan Ljubicic, Andy Roddick, Robredo and David Nalbandian in the Shanghai field.

Clijsters triumphs

At Hasselt, Kim Clijsters beat Estonian qualifier Kaia Kanepi 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 to retain the Gaz de France Stars title.

At Hasselt (Belgium) (WTA Gaz de France Stars): Final: Kim Clijsters bt Kaia Kanepi 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Semifinals: Kaia Kanepi bt Michaella Krajicek 6-4, 6-4; Kim Clijsters bt Vera Zvonareva 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

At Quebec City (Canada) (WTA Bell Challenge): Marion Bartoli bt Lilia Osterloh 3-6, 6-3, 6-1; Olga Poutchkova bt Severine Bremond 2-6, 6-0, 7-5. — Agencies
