Manikandan shocks Girish

Chennai: S.S. Manikandan of Madurai shocked World under-10 champion Girish Koushik of Mysore to join the 19 leaders with full three points in the National under-11 chess championship being played here at the Sri Ramachandra Medical College on Sunday.

Girish had not castled with the white pieces in the queen's gambit and paid the price for it. Manikandan used his passed queen bishop pawn to win material and checkmated his opponent with a rook against a lone king on the 73rd turn.

Second seed K. Vijaykanth (AP) also suffered a defeat at the hands of his Statemate Y.V.K. Chakravarthy despite playing white. Two higher-rated players from Andhra Pradesh, R. Eswar and Abhilash Reddy, also suffered defeats.

Eight rounds remain to be played. .
