CANBERRA: Fijian Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase has abandoned the controversial legislation which would see those involved in the coup in 2000 granted amnesties, according to a local media report on Saturday. The legislation is the focus of a stand-off between Mr. Qarase and the military, whose Commander, Commodore Frank Bainimarama has called for the Prime Minister to step down if he does not drop the legislation. Cmdr. Bainimarama said it would be a step backward for the country if the Government goes ahead with its legislative agenda. Mr. Qarase's backdown coincides with the arrival back home of Cmdr. Bainimarama, who had been visiting troops in West Asia in the past days when the stand-off led to speculation of another coup. Xinhua
