CHENNAI: Sinimole Paulose and Chatholi Hamza had a point to prove. Both did that in style, completing a double by winning the 800m, having won the 1,500m earlier on the final day of the Chennai Port Trust-National inter-State athletics championship at the floodlit Nehru Stadium on Sunday.

Surendra Singh of Uttaranchal too completed a double, adding the 5000m title (with a new meet record to boot, beating Bahadur Prasad's 11-year record) to his 10,000m success earlier.

Renjith Maheswary, the 20-year-old from Kerala, rewrote the triple jump meet record with his personal best of 16.50 m. Incidentally that is the mark the AFI had set for him to book his berth for the Doha Games and this Western Railway employee beat the existing record holder Amarjeet Singh's 16.44m to achieve that. Amarjeet himself could reach only 16.16m.

National record

The day also saw a National and meet records in the 20km walk for women where L. Deepamala Devi of Manipur bettered her own mark by around half a minute. That also set aside Bala Devi's meet mark in the process.

If the urge to excel drove Renjith in the pit, then sheer determination reflected in the efforts of both the Keralites Hamza and Sinimole, who though is representing Jharkand since she is attached to the Tata Academy. Attached to the MEG Wellington, Hamza had tasted success in the South Asian Games in Colombo recently. Coached by Nicolai from Belarus, Hamza powered his way to victory in the home stretch, clocking 1:49.11s, his best till date.

Sinimole's was even grander. Taking an early lead, Sinimole appeared for a grand finish when Piniki Paramanik out strode her nearing the home stretch but only briefly. In a flash, Sinimole seized the lead and there was no stopping her clocking her personal best time. At the end of the four-day meet, Kerala won the overall championship after a five-year gap, with 191 points. Tamil Nadu was placed next with 143.25 points.
